2008
Eat Local
Challenge
Hogtown HomeGrown, the local newsletter devoted to local and seasonal food,
is organizing the 2008 Eat Local Challenge for the month of May.
The purpose of this inaugural challenge is to encourage North Central Florida
residents and visitors to patronize local food producers and locally owned restaurants. Participants will agree to eat all their meals from locally grown or produced food and those who keep track of their efforts will be eligible for prizes in several categories. The challenge will conclude with a
Community Celebration on May 31, 2008.
The local, sustainable food movement has come to North Central Florida,
especially Gainesville and Alachua County.
- The number of farmers’ markets has doubled in the past two years.
- The Eastside Culinary Arts program has added local foods to their
curriculum and Eric Flagg (his film Gimme Green airs on the
Sundance Channel) is shooting a documentary of their efforts.
- Slow Food, an international organization advocating good food, cleanly
grown and fairly traded, has started a Gainesville convivium.
- The University of Florida has a restaurant dedicated to local foods and many
local restaurants pride themselves on serving local food.
- An online farmers market and a food cooperative will open in Gainesville
within the next few months.
How can you be part of this movement?
